Multifocal Lenses

Multifocal Lenses

What are they?

Multifocal lenses are a convenient solution that makes it easier to see a variety of different distances.

Around the age of 40, the lens within the eye loses its ability to change shape as easily, which results in gradual loss of ability to see things up close clearly. This age related condition is known as presbyopia. Reading glasses or multifocal lenses, also known as progressive lenses, are often prescribed to help.

Multifocal lenses have a gradual increase in power which allows you to see distance, intermediate and near with one pair of glasses.

Enjoy the ease of multifocals with our selection of lenses, customized to your needs.

How do they work?

Multifocal glasses allow you to clearly see at three different distances by using your reading and distance prescriptions, giving you the ability to read and view with clarity up close and far away.

Multifocal lenses have a seamless transition between prescriptions. This is different from bifocal glasses where the lens is separated into different segments.

It may take a few days to a few weeks to comfortably adjust to the different distances around you when using multifocals.

Tips for wearing multifocal glasses

Adjusting to a brand new pair of multifocals can be difficult. But there are some useful tips that can ease the transition and help you settle into your glasses quicker.

  • Make sure to wear your new multifocals as much as possible to encourage your eyes to adapt to your new lenses.
  • Try not to go back to your previous glasses as it can affect the progress you have made with your new multifocals.
  • Move your head when looking around, not just your eyes. By pointing your nose where you want to see you will be looking out the clearest part of the lens.
  • If you are struggling to wear them initially, try using the new glasses in a comfortable and familiar environment to help build confidence.
  • If after 1-2 weeks of using your multifocals, you are still struggling to adjust, visit a Canada Oscar Wylee store near you and our friendly team members will assist you.
